Abstract : The changes in physical and mechanical properties introduced by deforming as-quenched martensite of 1018, 1035, 1045 and 4340 steel were studied during subsequent tempering using several techniques. Tempering in the temperature range from 200 to 500 F revealed a retardation of tempering. The resistance to tempering was observed during use of hardness, dilation, color carbon and electrical resistivity techniques. A model employing a carbon atom-vacancy interaction was found to be consistent with the observed effects. (Author)
