Abstract : It is shown that all presently known exclusion conditions for equilibrium under majority rule are extremely restrictive, in the sense that if the preference of individual voters over a multidimensional space of commodities or policy vectors are convex and representable by a differentable utility function, then a very modest degree of heterogeneity of tastes makes all known exclusion conditions inapplicable.
