Abstract : The selection of the optimal degree of reaction of a single-stage turbine is studied based on the maximal circumferential efficiency, with the leakage losses not being taken into account. Using an Euler equation to represent work at a point on the turbine wheel circumference, a formula is obtained for the circumferential efficiency from which, after making certain assumptions and transforms and making use of equations of energy and continuity, a formula for the optimal degree of reaction is derived. Assuming that the obtained optimal value for the degree of reaction corresponds to the minimal total losses in the blade rings and to the exit velocity, then the flow angle at the exit of the rotor wheel can be other than 90 degrees. In this connection, the variations are discussed which this angle undergoes which depend on a value at the optimal degree of reaction. It is concluded that, depending on the relative circumferential velocity at the optimal degree of reaction, the angle of the flow discharging from a single-stage turbine rotor wheel can be either larger or smaller than 90 degrees.
