Abstract : An instrument developed for indicating the bread-away of streamline flow from aircraft surfaces, based on the pressure distribution along the streamline surface, is precise and reliable. The pressure receivers form metal caps over air holes positioned along the wing. These caps extend 3--5 mm above the wing surface and do not disturb the flow. The pressure signal of the air is fed through tubes to pressure sensors connected to two adjacent receivers. These sensors measure the pressure difference between them in the range -100 to +200 mm of water, sending continuous electric signals to a semiconductor relay set to trigger at a specific voltage corresponding to a specific pressure differential between receivers. With bread-away of the streamline flow, the relay is triggered and lights an indicator so that the number of lighted indicators shows the wing area covered by the bread-away. The relay signal is also fed to a diode coincidence circuit which warns of stalling and also directs the control system for stabilizing the boundary layer flow. The instrument can be used in helicopter rotor blades. (Author)
