Abstract : The paper presents a three-stage sequence of procedures for computing the schedules and load lists for ammunition underway replenishments (UNREP's). Schedules and load lists are first determined for the combatant ships, then the replenishment ships and, lastly, the point-to-point ships. The UNREP schedule for the combatants is one which maximizes the days on the line for these ships. All other calculations are then subordinated to this schedule, successively attempting to minimize the number of replenishment ships and then point-to-point ships. Considering the predictive quality of the planning data, the range of side conditions, and the variety of planning objectives, a sequence of sub-optimal procedures yielding uniformly good answers is often preferable to system algorithms for a global optimum involving extended computation and applied in such a planning millieu. A fictitious problem provides a scenario and input data for exercising many of the computational procedures and for presenting the numerical results. (Author)
