Abstract : The basic technique of utilizing a dielectric membrane in conjunction with a deformable layer was studied to determine which target configuration could provide the best display characteristics. It was found that a means must be provided to enhance the sensitivity of the control media, such as a metallic mesh attached to the dielectric membrane. The mesh acts to strengthen the force field, conduct the heat created by the electron beam and the absorbed light, as well as mechanically strengthen the target assembly. Some experiments were performed to substantiate the validity of this concept and to get an indication as to what display characteristics could be attained. Results thus far obtained, indicate that large screen display characteristics desirable for military information display can be achieved with this technique. (Author)
