Abstract : In dealing with data, the processes of quantization and sampling are often applied. The quantization process introduces an error in signal representation which affects the results of various techniques for analyzing and processing data. The study considers the combined effect and interaction of both sampling and quantization in terms of the dependency of the error in signal representation. Expressions for this error are compared in the sampled and continuous data cases. The analysis omits consideration of channel perturbations in order to express more directly the interaction of quantization and sampling. The influence of the data statistics on such expressions is explored and suggested guidelines are given for reducing the error by appropriate choices for quantization levels and sample times.
