Abstract : In this report the influence of an additional impurity ion, Ce(3+), on the 6P(7/2) fluorescence of Gd(3+) in SrF2 is examined. Seven samples containing 0.1 mole percent Gd(3+) and different concentrations of Ce(3+) ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 mole percent were studied. The enhancement of the Gd(3+) fluorescence observed for increasing Ce(3+) concentration is attributed to non-radiative energy transfer between Ce(3+) and Gd(3+). Relative quantum efficiencies of transfer are reported for the spectra associated with both excitations. The quantum efficiency of transfer for 2500 A excitation is an order of magnitude higher than that for 2750 A. The spectrum observed under 2750 A excitation is predominantly that of the tetragonal site. However, the spectrum observed under 2500 A excitation is previously unobserved. It is tentatively identified as a monoclinic site. The relatively high quantum efficiency of transfer and the proposed model for the symmetry site (monoclinic) observed under 2500 A excitation suggest exchange as the dominant mechanism of transfer. The transfer mechanism for the sites involved in the spectrum observed under 2750 A excitation cannot be identified from this data, although it is probably some combination of multipolar transfer mechanisms.
