Abstract : This project was an experimental attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of diffraction by a grating of thermal phonon radiation in a helium bath at temperatures below 0.3K. If such feasibility could be established, the technique could be exploited to develop a 'phonon monochromator' for experiments in electron-phonon interactions, for example, and to develop a means of measuring phonon spectra of solids directly. For reasons of experimental difficulty, such feasibility was not demonstrated, and appears very doubtful. (Author)
