Abstract : The report summarizes the results obtained from a three year analytical investigation of transient laminar and steady turbulent boundary layers for incompressible, two-dimensional flow. The analysis of these two classes of boundary-layer flows is based upon a solution of the appropriate partial differential equations by an approximation technique, the method of weighted residuals. Results were obtained for the transient laminar flow over a semi-infinite flat plate for both the boundary-layer equations and a modification to these equations which includes an axial diffusion term. For turbulent flows, several different boundary-layer prediction methods were developed by utilizing different turbulent shear stress models. In addition, a unified comparison of some thirty local and global shear stress models was made by comparing the predicted shear stress profiles with twelve carefully selected experimental studies taken from the literature. On the basis of this comparison, eleven different shear models were incorporated into computation schemes using the method of weighted residuals and the resulting calculations were compared in terms of computed values of the boundary-layer parameters.
