Abstract : The first two reports in this collection describe the research leading to the discovery of the reasons for the failure of ball retaining cages in 'deep-groove' ball bearings used in electrical machines. These are followed by a 'Code of Practice', and details of practical laboratory techniques used to investigate the subject are given in the fourth and fifth papers. Finally there is a theoretical and computer study which shows the factors affecting the selection of a bearing and the factors affecing the design of the cage pockets. (Author)
