Abstract : A particular STOL aircraft (the De Havilland of Canada, 'Otter') was simulated using a variable-stability helicopter to assess the simulator's capabilities in duplicating the flight characteristics of this class of aircraft. Direct comparisons were made by the pilots through alternate flights in the simulator and on the actual aircraft, and they concluded that a very convincing simulation could be effected, particularly with respect to lateral-directional characteristics. Using the 'Otter' as the base condition, several lateral-directional stability derivatives were varied to investigate their influences on the handling qualities during a low speed visual manoeuvring and approach task. The results of these investigations are presented in the form of pilot opinion data. (Author)
