Abstract : Differential thermal analysis of the fractionated samples of polymethyl methacrylate were taken with quartz sand as the reference in the temperature range of 20-450C. NiCr-NiAl wires were used as the thermal couple, and temperature of the reactor was raised at 8-10 degrees per minute. All the samples give two heat absorption peaks and their positions correspond to the two decomposition mechanisms of polymethyl methacrylate. The second heat absorption peak becomes more pronounced as the molecular weight of the fractionated samples increases. This is due to a decrease in number of the molecular ends required by the first type of decomposition mechanism, and to the increase in the molecular chain length that enhances cleavage of the C-C bond. This work proves the existence of the two mechanisms of thermal decomposition of polymethyl methacrylate. (Author)
