Abstract : In the microprogram automaton developed by the Institute of Cybernetics, AN UkrSSR, the 'racing' phenomenon is precluded by time-separating the operation of logic two-cycle elements of the combination unit and the change-of-state of storage elements of the automaton. The combination unit contains tunnel-diode elements capable of storing the input signal. The storage parameters depend on the selection of load lines on the characteristic of the GaAs tunnel diode. The synthesis of the above microprogram automaton includes these four steps: (1) Each operation is presented as a microprogram, and like microprograms are grouped together; (2) The encoding of automaton states is simplified; (3) The combination unit is designed; (4) The load capacity of the storage elements is coordinated with the number of inputs of the combination unit. By using tunnel diodes with 1-ma peak current, 15-18 elements can be connected to the voltage-output trigger. An experimental automaton for 86 states and 9 microprograms was built and tested.
