Abstract : The equistor structure belongs with a class of iterative-circuit universal structures with collective behavior of elements; an element can be tuned for connecting functions by signals from other elements. The number of functionally distinct states of an element depends only on the number of logic functions realized by that element. Principal characteristics of computing structures based on the above elements are: (1) Completeness of connections (the elements are based on 'inhibition' and 'constant 1' functions which can be easily transformed into AND, OR, NOT functions); (2) The storage capacity needed for tuning information is only 1 bit; the behavior of an element depends on the states of adjacent elements. The equistor structures have these advantages: (1) Failure of one or more external leads results only in the restricting of elements associated with the faulty lead to connection functions. (2) Fewer control external leads without making the element more complex; (3) In addition to conventional reliability-ensuring techniques, functional and time redundancy based on element interaction is possible in equistor structures.
