Abstract : The paper analyzes a method of imparting transverse energy to a large diameter electron beam injected into a magnetic field. Theory predicts that a planar electron gun oriented at an angle to the magnetic field can be used for this purpose, provided that the electron Larmor radius corresponding to the beam energy is large compared with the length of the acceleration region. The ratio of parallel to transverse energy in the beam can be controlled by varying the magnetic field in the gun region. The theory has been checked experimentally by analyzing the parallel and transverse electron beam energies obtained using an angled electron gun. A gridded probe placed on the axis of the system was used for the energy analysis. The ratio of transverse to parallel beam energies showed good agreement with theory, and could be varied from zero to more than three. (Author)
