Abstract : A survey of existing solutions describing the stress distribution around the crack tip of an initially curved sheet is made and a method for estimating approximate stress itensity factors of other more complicated shell geometries is discussed. In addition, a fracture criterion incorporating a geometry and plasticity correction is derived for the prediction of failure in flawed pressurized vessels of arbitrary shape. A comparison with some of the existing experimental data in the literature substantiates its potential use. (Author)
