Abstract : The investigation was concerned with the application of the theorems of minimum total potential and minimum complementary potential to the creep analysis of shells. The energy relations used here have been obtained by direct integration of the stresses and strains over the thickness of the shell. Such an integration gives rise to cross product terms between the curvatures and the extensional strains in the strain energy and also, between the membrane stresses and the bending stresses in the complementary energy. With the use of the derived energy expressions, a long circular cylindrical shell subject to uniformly applied edge moments with and without axial loads has been analyzed. The results so obtained are compared with those computed here on the basis of simplified energy expressions suggested by earlier investigators. (Author)
