Abstract : This report describes new flywheel configurations that promise an order of magnitude improvement as energy storage devices. As presently conceived, the energy density has been improved over ten times, with the prospect for additional improvement in performance as the next generation of high strength uniaxial filamentary materials becomes available. This super flywheel is significant in its application to the urban electric vehicle. Instead of only being used to reduce the acceleration power requirements, as has been proposed in many studies, the new flywheel can actually be used as the primary energy source, and batteries can be eliminated altogether. Many other applications are also discussed. (Author)
