Abstract : The solution for the acoustic field due to a monochromatic point source located in a stratified medium is obtained by direct numerical integration of the relevant hydrodynamical field equations. The application of the method is demonstrated via various examples and shown to provide accurate results. In order to implement the formalism, it is necessary to solve for the depth dependent Green's function associated with the reduced wave equation. Two general methods of solution are presented and discussed. The first is an exact representation in terms of hypergeometric functions. The second has its foundations in the theory of integral equations. (Author)
