Abstract : In previous progress reports various techniques were proposed for calculating the velocity potential and the velocity components in the simulation of the air flow field about a ship. The present report presents a solution by using the technique of discrete, distributed doublets. The technique leads to solutions of small matrices (of approximately the 140th order) and to the calculation of a small number of coefficients. The choice of the small order matrices was intentional. Because the problem can be solved only by means of computer-aided hydrodynamics (numerical approach) and is very complicated due to the shape of the three-dimensional body, a considerable number of pilot programs had to be prepared initially in order to find the appropriate technique for the final calculations of the main flow. A small number of wind-tunnel tests were available for comparison of the numerically calculated values with those obtained from tests. The results of the comparison are good. (Author)
