Abstract : The report discusses the theory of the uniaxial tensile test of a brittle material and describes in detail the development and calibration of an apparatus designed to subject fine-grained polycrystalline ice specimens to uniaxial tensile and compressive loads up to failure, and to give a continuous stress-strain curve during the loading cycle.
