Abstract : Available commercial beam dividers were not of adequate quality for diverting some laser power into a camera for the purpose of recording the power density distribution of an intense laser beam. A method was developed for constructing the required beam dividers from thin-film Mylar. These were found to be sturdy enough to withstand repeated application of very intense laser pulses, and they could be cleaned as required without being damaged. These beam dividers were evaluated both statically and dynamically for flatness and parallelism. In addition they were evaluated statically for uniformity, resistance to damage, and efficiency of light transmission. The dynamic tests were performed at the ruby wavelength of 6943 Angstroms and the static tests at 6328 Angstroms. (Author)
