Abstract : The purpose of the MH-1A protection system review was to compare and evaluate the protection system design against proposed IEEE standards for protection system design and against other current design techniques. An accident analysis was performed that determined that the source range rod withdrawal accident (SRRWA) would result in core damage if the power range scram were to fail during the accident. A reliability analysis of the protection system provided protection system reliabilities for the present protection system with the present test frequencies and for an improved test program. Suggested protection system modifications included additions of -14 volt dc power supplies so that the transistor switches driving the scram control relays would be independent of one another. Also, additional testing switches and test indications are recommended for the process protection channels and the scram control relays. (Author)
