Abstract : A completely unambiguous prescription is presented for extending the equation-of-motion method, including pairing, beyond the random-phase approximation. When combined with the idea of a generalized effective field, this prescription leads to a simple, self-consistent treatment of pairing, lifetime, and renormalization effects in many-body systems.
