Abstract : Mixtures of acetylene and nitrogen, highly diluted in argon were subjected to reflected shock temperatures, 2244-4923K, at total pressures up to 550 cm Hg. Changes in sample compositions were followed spectrophotometrically by photographing the total emission spectrum, by recording relative emission intensities as a function of time over selected narrow band widths, and by measuring time dependent absorptions of characteristic radiation at the (0,0) band heads of C2 and CN. The effect of added oxygen (20ppm level) was tested. The results served to eliminate several simplistic mechanisms, and point to the necessity for considering a somewhat extended chain of coupled radical reactions. (Author)
