Abstract : The report compares the direct maintenance cost structures for three commercial jet aircraft operated by one of the major trunk airlines and two military transport aircraft. The results indicate that military maintenance operations are far more labor-intensive and more expensive than those in the commercial sector. Recommendations include implementing a more capital-intensive approach, reducing scheduled maintenance, establishing major maintenance bases, and training more aircraft mechanics as generalists rather than specialists.
