Abstract : By means of a new labour-saving instrument for automatic measurement of the charge delivered, by porous nickel electrodes impregnated with cadmium, as a function of geometric cd, it has been shown that: (a) The performance is quantiatively dependent upon the free (pore) volume accessible to the solution. A new concept, the 'choking index', has been defined and evaluated from the results. (b) Porous cadmium electrodes contaminated with carbonate can be simply and successfully rejuvenated by thermal cracking of the carbonates, provided that rather critical process boundaries, which have been delineated, are not exceeded. Possible application to the study of other electrodes, and also the needed theoretical developments, are indicated. (Author)
