Abstract : A study was made of the effect of various hydrocarbon side groups on the hydrogenation of benzene. According to their hydrogenation speed, the studied compounds appear in the following order: benzene > ethyl-benzene > toluene > n-xylene > m-xylene >o-xylene. The order of reaction, according to substance being hydrogenated, for benzene and o-xylene, is a zero order; for the remaining investigated compounds it is close to zeroth order. For the first time it has been shown that the hydrogenation of benzene and its homologues takes place with insignificant displacement of potential. The small displacement of potential makes it possible to assume that the adsorption takes place on the catalyst, the surface of which is occupied by hydrogen. The alcohol displaces aromatic hydrocarbons from the surface of the catalyst, and the reaction does not take place. (Author)
