Abstract : Fluorescence efficiencies for excitation of nitrogen by 1- to 5-MeV positive ions have been measured at pressures of 2 to 19 Torr. Power output in the 3914-A (0,0) band of the N2(+) first negative system was measured with an interference-filter photometer, and efficiencies for production of this band at lower pressure were calculated from the collisional deactivation rate. For Ne(+), O(+), N2(+), and O2(+) ions with various initial velocities the 'low pressure' efficiencies so determined were in the range 0.4 to 0.6%. Spectra of the nitrogen emission in the 3400- to 7800-A range were recorded. N2(+) first negative bands and N2 first positive and second positive bands were prominent in the spectra. Nearly all the first negative emission originated in the v' = 0 upper vibrational state. Most of the second positive emission was in the v' = 0 to 2 band sequences. Spectral intensities were corrected for effects of collisional quenching, to obtain low-pressure relative efficiencies. Efficiencies for nine second positive bands were determined relative to the 3914-A efficiencies for excitation by N(+), Ne(+), N2(+), and Kr(+) ions with energies of 4 to 5 MeV. After corrections for collisional quenching, the spectral distribution of nitrogen fluorescence excited by ions is similar to that in spectra obtained by Hartman for excitation of air by 850-eV electrons.
