Abstract : The basic objective of the program is to study methods by which nuclear debris measurements can be made more extensive and interpretable through utilization of important new advances in high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy. The program focussed on two principal areas: (1) a laboratory program to investigate, for selected weapons materials, the fission product gamma-ray spectra obtained under various conditions and (2) a study of the utility and feasibility of using Ge(Li) detectors on satellites to obtain diagnostic information on nuclear weapons detonated in the atmosphere or at high altitudes. The preliminary survey laboratory measurements of the gamma rays emitted from neutron induced fission fragments have been completed. On the basis of the preliminary laboratory measurements, estimates have been made of the responses expected in space and a proposed experiment has evolved for conducting a proper evaluation of the operational model. These various activities are briefly reviewed in the report.
