Abstract : The chevron-shaped contact cable connector was designed to meet three goals-maximum density, optimum ease in terminating ribbon cable and minimum signal distortion. Based on the very small pin and socket contact, which allows the .025 inches centerline of the ribbon cable to be carried through the connector, the design permits the entire termination process for a 64 conductor ribbon cable to be completed in a few minutes. Stripping, tinning, insertion and soldering are mass operations taking only seconds each for the entire cable. The terminated connector is compatible with today's and even tomorrow's high frequency, high speed circuitry. In some cases the impedance mismatch encountered in a connector is less than the impedance variations normally found even in high grade transmission lines. The crosstalk from the connector section of the circuit is comparable to the crosstalk encountered in the cable and, in some cases, less. Chevron-shaped contact connectors provide not only maximum packaging density and maximum termination ease but also the maximum transfer of power from line to board. (Author)
