Abstract : Films of anhydrous cobalt difluoride have been prepared by vacuum evaporation and deposition on quartz and barium fluoride substrates for a large range of deposition rates and a vacuum of less than 0.00003 mm. Films up to 1.2 microns m thick were prepared and electron diffraction showed them to consist of randomly orientated crystallites. The optical absorption and dispersion of these films was measured at 300K. The intrinsic absorption edge obeys Urbach's rule for photon energies between 1.5 and 6.2 eV. The films absorb water vapour to form the tetrahydrate and the resulting infra-red absorption has been measured as a function of time and humidity. The dispersion of the refractive index has been measured over the wavelength range 0.2 to 2.2 microns m and has been fitted to an empirical equation. (Author)
