Abstract : An attempt was made to resolve the differences in sheep sixty day median lethal dose (LD50(60)) values between Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) and Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL). Each laboratory purchased sheep from local suppliers. One-half the animals were air lifted to the recipient Laboratory in January 1968. The second half of the animal exchange was accomplished in June 1968. Each laboratory gave graded doses of 60Co gamma radiation on successive days to: (1) animals held for six months (acclimatized) and (2) animals held for one week (nonacclimatized). Median lithal dose values on NRDL sheep irradiated at AFWL increased from previous values. Median lethal dose values on AFWL sheep irradiated at NRDL likewise increased. The findings of the interlaboratory investigation confirmed the existence of factors (not presently understood) that resulted in higher LD50(60) values than encountered at the home laboratories. A number of factors potentially responsible for the findings are discussed. (Author)
