Abstract : An investigation was directed toward obtaining an improved understanding of the properties of the cesium neutralization plasma existing in ignited-mode thermionic converters. Toward this end an analysis was made of electron and ion transport phenomena based on conditions known to exist in thermionic converter plasmas. In support of this analysis, detailed measurements of electron density and temperature in the ignited-mode converter plasma were made using high resolution spectroscopic techniques. With this information, quantitative estimates were made of: the electric field intensity, the electron kinetic energy flux, the ion current density, and the charged particle production rate. On the basis of these results, an interpretation was made of the role played by the cesium neutralization plasma in determining converter performance. (Author)
