Abstract : Although a great deal has been written recently concerning the design of nonlinear systems, time varying systems and multivariable systems, it is still a fact that there are no completely satisfactory methods available for the design of linear, time invariant, single input-single output systems. Two areas of difficulty are the choice of suitable specifications on system response and methods for choosing system parameters to meet as nearly as practicable the chosen specifications. If the system being considered is second order or dominant second order, classical procedures are quite adequate. However, for higher order systems, even though there is no real difficulty from an analysis point of view, a large amount of trial and error can be involved. This report presents a method for choosing system parameters so that a reasonable match between the system response and a simplified desired response is achieved. The parameters are determined by equating Laplace transforms of the system response and the desired response at an appropriate number of values of the Laplace variable, s, and solving for the parameters.
