Abstract : An instrument for measuring the coefficient of linear expansion of long aluminium alloy bars is described. It was fabricated from conventional equipment on hand yielding a degree of precision not generally found in physical testing laboratories except those having highly specialized length comparators. The coefficients of four bars each 36 in (91 cm) long and from the same melt were measured relative to that of a length of Invar channel of known coefficient with an accuracy to 2 times 10 to the minus 7th power in per in (cm per cm) per degC over a temperature range of 10 degC above room temperature. Several novel features in technique and apparatus are described. (Author)
