Abstract : A technique for sensing the initial reaction of primary explosives initiated by a hot wire has been developed. Exploratory shots were made with lead azide, silver azide, basic lead styphnate, and normal lead styphnate using a capacitor discharge to heat the bridgewire. Results with the technique show that initiation can occur not only during the bridgewire temperature rise but can also occur on the cooling curve of the wire well after cessation of the capacitor discharge.
