Abstract : The objectives of this study were to measure the pressure and flow in a hydrostatic circular thrust bearing, determine an empirical flow correlation and apply it to a representative problem. Selection of the experimental parameters was determined by dimensional analysis and insight for the interpretation of test results is provided by a theoretical discussion of divergent gas flow between closely spaced flat plates. This report summarizes the results of work performed on entrance effects during the past several years to extend to a considerable degree the ranges of parameters which have previously been explored. The experimental data is included. (Author)
