Abstract : Realization of a computing medium, i.e., an aggregate of self-adaptive and highly homogeneous computer circuits, is investigated by considering that each cell of the medium consists of an address circuit, a memory, and a function circuit. As in real circuits the first two components usually require 90 percent of the circuit elements, all three are considered together in defining a function expressing the number of circuit elements which is subsequently minimized. Circuit variants in which each of three sections on the average performs 1.6-2.5 logic functions are studied. As a starting point, a study is made of a gated inverter circuit which either inverts the input signal or gives a constant output. More complex and at the same time versatile circuits resembling the generic inverter are presented which use transistors, diodes, and unipolar transistors. In addition all of these variants include elements whose I-V characteristic has an S-shape.
