Abstract : An infrared diagnostic method has been developed and used to observe the vibrational relaxation of N2 using CO additive and O2 using H2O additive. Relaxation rate data for both N2 and O2 are obtained behind shock waves which are in very good agreement with other published data. Similar measurements in nozzle expansion flows of N2 indicate lower vibrational temperatures than anticipated on the basis of the shock-wave data. This work was done as an experimental study of thermal nonequilibrium which can occur in air and its component gases. (Author)
