Abstract : An elementary theory has been developed for consecutive ion-molecule reaction mechanism in the gas phase at low kinetic energies of the ions. The nature of the individual ion-molecule collisions is studied, and in this way a number of possible reaction sequences are distinguished and analyzed. The theory is applied to tandem mass spectrometers of perpendicular type and the intensities, I(n), of the ions of different order, n, are calculated. Three possible methods are suggested for identifying the kinetic order of the ions, as well as methods for determining the microscopic reaction rate constants and cross sections. These data can be determined at different excitation energies of the parent molecule ions that initiate the consecutive ion-molecule reactions. (Author)
