Abstract : A survey of the published literature was carried out to determine the effects of system parameters on the maximum bubble diameter in saturated nucleate pool boiling of liquids. The survey has shown the system pressure and the surface tension to be the two most important parameters upon which the maximum bubble diameter depends. Although various other system parameters have also been found to affect the maximum bubble diameter, it has not been possible to predict the effect of these parameters either qualitatively or quantitatively due to a serious lack of systematic experimental data. An analytical expression has been proposed which can be used to convert the measured maximum bubble diameters from narrow, flat heating surfaces into equivalent maximum bubble diameters from a large flat heating surface, for cases where the bubble diameter exceeds the width of the heating surface.
