Abstract : In the investigation of the quality of pipe billet, the predominant external defects are of melt origin. A large share of the defects is found on the parts of blooms corresponding to the bottom sections of ingots. The prevailing form of defects are nonmetallic inclusions and scabs. During rolling, the surface defects are removed at the parting in prefinishing and finishing passes. It was found that both the volume of repair and the number of rejects increase with intermediate inspection, repair and heating with transite during the process of rolling. Rolling billets using different calibrations at various plants did not have a substantial effect on the quality of the rounds. (Author)
