Abstract : Increasing the temperature of the working medium is a most effective means of improving the operating economy and reducing the metal requirement of turbo-assemblies. The accomplishment of this task involves not only the use of improved high-temperature materials but also of improved cooling systems. The selection of the rational cooling system involves ponderous hydraulic calculations considering that the cooling circuit represents a complex, ramified hydraulic network with a large number of nodal points, among other things. (Generally, solution of the problem of non-adiabatic, steady-state motion of a compressible gas is considered after taking friction forces into account. The unknowns are: temperature, density, pressure, and velocity. The starting equations are those of the law of conservation of mass, momentum, energy balance and the equation of state.) Digital computers cannot be used for this purpose, since the problem hardly admits an easy numerical solution. Hence the best solution is to use analog grid models with the aid of which virtually any flow mode of a compressible gas can be simulated by the method of successive approximation. (Author)
