Abstract : While the first steps of microminiaturization involved reducing the size and improving the technology of hardware, the center of gravity subsequently shifted to the design of integral system for a radical solution of the following chief problems: construction of highly reliable and highly technological systems with great redundancy and comparable to biological systems, construction of systems of great componential density, small size, low weight and power consumption, and drastic reduction in equipment and operating costs. The most promising direction in solving these problems is to produce multielement functional integral systems where in one volume or on the surface of the material a complex block is created which contains a great number of functional elements. Production technology is considerably simplified in the production of single-type functional blocks using integral circuits, and the cost of manufacturing them is going down perceptibly. Thus the developmental prospects in microelectronics brings to the fore new demands on the principles of logic and computer device design. It is obvious that the optimum in constructing microcomponent units is to make them of cells of a single type, i.e., to design them as homogeneous structures. (Author)
