Abstract : The problem of large uniform torsion, up to complete coil-in, of a tubular open section of circular cross-section is discussed in detail. The contraction of the tube radius observed in experiments is theoretically derived and the torque-twist relation is presented. The helix co-angle emerges as a significant parameter for the description of the response of tubular open sections to an applied torque. The fundamental law of storable tube dimensioning is deduced in a new form, independent of the storage drum diameter. It can now solely be based upon the properties of the tubing material. (Author)
