Abstract : Two types of plastic and three different designs of collection containers were evaluated after storage in acid-citrate-extrose for 7, 21, or 28 days. Various tests, including red cell posttransfusion survival in human subject, did not demonstrate significant differences between the various types of units or plastics. The overall higher survival, as compared to previous work with blood stored in ACD in glass bottles, would suggest that plastic provides a better storage container besides having certain mechanical advantages.
