Abstract : A low noise regenerative microwave amplifier comprised of a low noise traveling-wave tube modified for low gain, very low noise operation, and an external regeneration loop is described. By decoupling the electron beam from the RF circuit, the gain of the traveling-wave tube is reduced, but the noise transferred from beam to circuit is also reduced, thereby improving the noise figure of the tube. It is demonstrated that the use of regeneration to enhance the gain of the tube has little effect on the reduced noise figure of the tube and that, consequently, the overall tube-feedback signal-to-noise ratio is improved. A brief analysis of the traveling-wave tube-feedback device is given, and the results of an experiment performed at S-Band are presented. (Author)
