Abstract : From a comparison of the far-infrared and Raman spectra of some rare earth aluminum garnet crystals it has become possible to assign some electronic Raman transitions. It has also been observed that one of the phonon modes shifts in going from the yttrium aluminum to the ytterbium aluminum garnet compound and there seems no doubt about the assignment of such phonon modes.
